Massawa
If you are looking for some authentic Ethiopian-Eritrean cuisine, then you might want to make your way to Harlem to check out Massawa. It’s a traditional East African restaurant where you eat your food by hand with injera bread. Indeed, this modern and comfortable setting restaurant is the oldest African eatery in New York City. It’s open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 11:30 am to 11:30 pm. They have many delicious items on their menu as well as vegan options.
I had their Axum, honey wine, that made me want to take a bottle home. It was that good! I have to buy this Axum wine! I also had the sambusas (stuffed pastry shells), the Lentil soup, and a Massawa one-person sampler that consisted of chicken, beef, and lamb. My friend Melissa had the Derho Tsebhi dish, braised stewed chicken. After, we topped everything off with some fresh Ethiopian coffee, which Ethiopia is known to have some of the best coffee in the world. The whole experience was terrific, and the food very satisfying! Melissa and I thoroughly enjoyed the Massawa restaurant!
